Koalas, those adorable symbols of Australia, have faced a tumultuous journey throughout history. From ancient population crashes to their current endangered status, these marsupials have endured more than meets the eye. My recent study, published in Molecular Biology and Evolution, sheds light on a critical period in koala history, challenging conventional theories and offering a deeper understanding of their evolutionary story.
The Mystery of Koala Population Crashes
Koalas, with their distinctive grey fur and cuddly appearance, have become iconic figures in Australia's wildlife. Yet, their presence in the wild has become increasingly elusive, especially in certain regions. This decline has led to their classification as endangered in several states. But is this a recent phenomenon, or has history repeated itself?
My research delves into the genetic history of koalas, utilizing their genomes as historical records. Previous studies suggested a major population decline around 40,000 years ago, shortly after human arrival in Australia. This correlation led many to believe that humans played a role in the decline of koala populations. However, my study pushes this timeline back by an astonishing 60,000 years.
Unraveling the Genetic Timeline
The key to understanding koala population dynamics lies in estimating their mutation rate - the rate at which new mutations occur in each generation. Each species has a unique mutation rate, and for koalas, this rate was previously unknown. To address this gap, we sequenced the genomes of 12 koalas from three families, allowing us to count mutations across generations.
The results were intriguing. We found only 25 mutations per offspring, a remarkably low number considering the vastness of the koala genome. Applying this mutation rate to a large sample of koala genomes, we discovered that population declines occurred around 100,000 years ago, long before humans arrived in Australia. This finding effectively rules out humans as a cause of the ancient population crash.
Environmental Factors: The Real Culprit?

The Pleistocene epoch saw repeated glacial and interglacial periods, resulting in drastic shifts in climate and habitat. The western population, recently identified as a distinct species, went extinct around 28,000 years ago. Eastern populations, however, managed to persist through harsh glacial conditions, eventually expanding and forming the genetic groups we see today along the east coast of Australia.

Despite these challenges, there is hope. Most koala populations have only recently started losing genetic diversity, and with rapid population recovery efforts, further loss and inbreeding can be prevented. The eastern koala, a resilient survivor, may once again persevere.
